Reflections: Hibernating, Twittering and Art

its way past your bedtime young squirell

I’ve usually wrote and scheduled my blog by this time.  Where has the day gone?  Trying to do too many things at once makes the day short.  The days are short enough with these long nights.  I wonder what our ancestors made of it?  I just want to hibernate when it gets dark and cold, squirrels have the right idea.  But I can’t afford to do that – not put enough nuts away to retire yet!

Here's one we didn't make earlier....

Still unsure if Twitter was a good idea, or a nowhere one.  I’d better keep with it I suppose.  I’m probably not making the most of it, but we will see.  It’s coming up to my blogs first anniversary at the end of this month, and I have a few changes planned for that.  So far, I have only missed 4 days, and that’s  before I got the hang of it.  HA! not that  I have got the hang of it.  Every so often half the formatting goes BIG, a bit aggravating, but at least I have stopped losing my work now.

This is Francis Bacon's studio. Seen this in Dublin....mine was getting a bit like it lol!

I’ve been priming a canvas today (bit of a while since I did that).  I don’t seem to find any time for my art these days, though I do keep creative.  I mean, getting down to the nitty-gritty of painting.  I may turn the spare bedroom into a studio, it’s a bit cold in the cellar.  That cellar has been used as band practise (by my daughter years ago), a brewery (Chateau Red Cloud…now that was a very good year! not to mention ? I’ve forgotten what the beer was called but I could taste sterilising liquid (PURE ale probably), then an art studio.  It’s now hubby’s ‘space’ but he’s never down there now he can have it to himself – typical!

A Witter about Twitter

I can’t make up my mind whether to join Twitter or not.  First of all, why is it any different from Facebook? (which I go on infrequently).  Are  your  ‘twitterings’ open for all to read’?  How will this help my blog?  I mean, do I write ‘I am now blogging away as we speak………‘ and do a link?  In short, I haven’t a clue lol! Is anyone, reading this post actually on Twitter? and how has it helped them?  and could they help me?  What are ‘followers’? and will I look sad if I don’t get any? lol! (and will I care? …  er yes!)  So many questions, but what are the answers?

the twitter bird says follow me...but what if they don't lol!

With One hand to the Plough, I’m hardly in the Peak District

peaks and troughs, ups and downs....

peaks and troughs, ups and downs....

Again a quick post before work.  I really don’t know what happens sometimes on my blog, there’s a lot of troughs and peaks.  I can’t seem to find some kind of sequence.  The whole stat chart looks like the Plough or sometimes ‘the big dipper’!  Why this is I don’t know.  I just keep plodding away, even though some days I am too busy to blog.  I always try to find something.  It has become an obsession, this blogging very day, you know!

Blue Animation from ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ Echostains

‘Blue Animation is part of the ‘Echostains’ project.  The project is about communication – all types.  In the third part of the project (The Yellow Wallpaper), gestural marks are made to ‘suggest’ shapes, thoughts, feelings, etc.  ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and tells the tale of a woman having some sort of breakdown, who begins seeing things in the wallpaper.  It’s a good story…. and scary!  Read it online through the link.

I have used colours related to Disney to suggest the actual ‘animation’.  Whilst the technique is mostly gestural, there a a few recognisable forms in there.

Media used; Acrylic paint on canvas approx 18in x 12in (private collection)

Incoming traffic? Seems like theres no parking here

Well this is my 80th post in  82 days.  I can’t understand why I’m not getting more traffic.  I have followed the advice to blog every day, and I do.  Don’t get me wrong, I ENJOY doing it, but it’s a bit disheartening when I’ve put time and effort into a post and I don’t get many hits, knowing that it will soon be relegated into my archives, never to see the light of day probably ever again.

But perversity is my middle name, so I plod on…and on and on and on.  The collage  was made with tissue on silver card, the scratching, a form of communication: the lights from life reflected into the darkness.  Well, that cheered me up lol!

hey-mr-tambourine-man-are you there?

Well, I am loathe to put anything up on my blog today.  I don’t know whats happened, but there doesn’t appear to be anyone around today, and there wasn’t very many yesterday either.  What exactly is the point?  Perhaps I’m talking about the wrong thing?  Jesus and Politics seem to go down well, there’s a hundred billion thousand of those out there.

please come to my seance

Well, I don’t care, I’ll keep on rattling away to myself (mostly).  It keeps me writing  and   hopefully some people might actually find it helpful and enjoy it, as I enjoy doing it.  On with the Motley!  Tomorrow is another day.

Continuing over from page 9 with the pink pearlised ink, the words: –

Booby trapped

shows a drawing of a foot treading unwaringly on a hidden bomb.  Life is a time bomb really if you think about it; ready to go off at any moment.  Then it’s all over: that’s it really.  Booby traps: a game of Snakes and Ladders.

Talk in a whisper Green Grass’

The snake whispers this (well hisses it), makes me think of the words ‘Why do you whisper green grass?’  This is a VERY ancient song, even more ancient than me!  It is by the Inkspots and called ‘Whispering’ Grass’‘Why do you whisper green grass? why tell the trees what aint so’.  From this you can see the way my mind is working, and the word and image association (whispering grass – snake in the grass)

The whispering grass is associated with the Inkspots.  Inkspots and inkblots are used in psychology tests called Rorschach tests; the blot suggesting pictorial matter, depending on the frame of mind or temperament of the patient.  They are used by Forensics and for character assessment.

Life is a game of chance, and depending on how you look at it and how you deal with it, or interpret it, you will bear the consequences.  Sometimes it seems that you don’t even have to ‘do’ anything for things to ‘happen’ to you: there is usually something going on behind the scenes though; a chain of events etc.

In the third part of the actual Echostains Project the communication took the form of a visual narrative and auto suggestion.  I did a series of inkblots: spilling various inks onto paper and manipulating the streams of ink, using salt to impede the flow.  Watcher  and ‘Meeting Place’ were made with black and white ink  on canvas.

There is a lot of control versus chance in my work, which stems from my interest in Surrealism and the sub conscious.  I tend to use the sub conscious as a tool for ideas.  ‘House on the Borderland’ is a book by William Hope Hodgson.  The colours (ink) I have used, express the eerie feeling experienced reading the book.  My attempt to express a feeling in colour.

1066 uses abstract markings to express movement.  The colours are an interpretation of colours used in the  Bayeux Tapestry and so suggested the title 1066 (Battle of Hastings)
