‘Winding down the year’

Posted in CHRISTMAS, PAST PLACES, WHAT HAPPENED IN VEGAS STAYS HERE!, WORDS AND COMMUNICATIONS, WRITING AND BLOGGING with tags , , , , on December 30, 2009 by echostains

Well the year’s very nearly over.  Is it just me, or does this decade seem the shortest decade ever?  It seems only yesterday that we celebrated the Millenium.  It’s frightening how life is galloping on, and the pace seems more and more frantic the older I get.

the next decade? fireworks as usual

There is a feeling of winding down as the year draws to a close, only to be fired up for a brief time , starting on 1st January 2010.  As usual, I shall start the year with good intentions , – I might even keep to my resolutions this time –  I can only hope.

Las Vegas

There are new  ideas are planned for my blog next year and there is a possibility of a music blog that my husband and I have been working on.  Not sure how that is going to work out yet, still playing with different formats.  This year has been the usual mixture of highs and lows, one of the highs being the Las Vegas wedding, and there have been quite a few lows, which I won’t go into:  suffice to say, I shall be glad to celebrate  2010, though it shall be with some trepidation because at the end of it I shall be……..lets just say older.

Cool Places: The Minus 5 Ice Bar, Mandalay Hotel, Las Vegas Navada USA

Just a quick one before going out.  Spent most of the day painting (as in painting and decorating).  All white paint in my hair (at least I THINK it’s white paint…lol!).  The colour scheme? not mine I may add….white paint on white paint.  I’ve got that snow blindness or whatever you call it.  Antarctic.

I’d love to go to the Antarctic!  The nearest I got was the Minus 5 Bar in the Mandalay Hotel, Las Vegas.  It’s a strange place to say the least.  You pay your money and are issued with a  parka and padded mittens and boots . When you go a bit further along you are given a bit of a talk about the bar…finally you are allowed into the inner sanctum.   A bar made of ICE! Thats right, actually made from ice!

there are ice sculptures, ice seats (with rugs on)…even the glasses are made out of ice!  How cool is that?  Obviously VERY lol!

Cocktails: My New Art Form?

could cocktails be my new art form?

could cocktails be my new art form?

Firstly, I’d like to say that I know nothing about cocktails.  I’ve only ever had a couple of cocktails in my whole life.   By this, I mean Pina Colada’s, Margueritas etc: old hat.

The cocktails I had in Las Vegas were an entirely different matter though: they has lots of different stuff in em.   Maybe it’s because they were drank in Las Vegas, in March this year, celebrating my daughters mariage that made the difference, I don’t know…..

The Witchdoctors were  drank in the Voodoo Lounge, (51st floor of the Rio Hotel) and  the Ghostini’s were drank in the Ghost Bar (Palms Hotel)

I had talked about a Cocktail night with my husband a couple of days ago: thinking it would be fun to experiment. Imagine my delight in finding that our local Lidels (or Liddles, as we pronounce it) was selling lots of cocktail accompaniments!  Watch this space whilst I experiment…

Go Ahead and Roam in Caesars Palace

talk about exhibitionism!

talk about exhibitionism!

Some of the hotels and arcades are fantastic in Las Vegas, some, well a bit tacky.  Caesars Palace was a not bad one though.  Wall to wall designer shops (Italian of course).

perhaps the Gods are angry?

The false sky however I think, is a bad idea as it always seems to be gloomy, even though it’s cracking the flags (stones) outside.  It also makes the pavements look wet!  If only they had different weather settings!  I think the photo above looks very Dali…..

How about this for the Midas touch!  I think this was some kind of shop.  I don’t know what they sold though because my eyes were filled with gold and fish!

Cabinets of Cher costumes, advertising her show, which we didn’t go to.  There are quite a few of these cabonets with costumes in, all over Vegas.  We saw one of Donny Osmonds containing his coat of many colours or technicolour dreamcoat.

Mother of the Bride STILL fascinating!

Just a short one tonight, been very busy with my photos (took me hours).  We took about 300 for the week, but I also recorded short  bits of films (3 hours worth).  I’ve not got round to watching them yet, so I hope they’ve turned out ok!

Here’s me with my fascinater on!  And I managed to keep it on all day too.  Mind you, I wasn’t exactly leaping around – not in those shoes!

The happy couple Bless them!

The happy couple Bless them!

Last Friday, 20th March my daughter got married in Las Vegas.  The wedding was in the Little White Chapel.  It was their dream to get married in Vegas, so all we could do was go along with it lol!  None of us had ever been to the US before, so that itself was an experience.  The flight took 10 hours from Manchester.  The first thing I noticed at McCarran airport was that it was smallish and a bit worn, with garish blue carpet that had seen better days.  Oh, and my first glimpse of slot machines!

The heat was a strange kind of heat.  Like and ‘old’ sun.  By ‘old’ I mean the sort of sun you see and feel when you are young, when the school holidays stretch out forever and the pavements burnt your feet and even rubbish didn’t look scruffy when the  sun lit it up.  You would have to have been there in ‘those days’ to know what I mean…..

and so castles made of sand.......

and so castles made of sand.......

The roads are really wide, massive and you don’t get a lot of time to get over them!  Besides the really expensive hotels, there seems to be a lot of concrete, sandstone type of building work.   It made me think of sandcastles and the non permanancy that seems to go on here.  I believe a lot of the casinos are knocked down after a few years, to make way for new.  The face  of Las Vegas seems to be perpetually changing.

By night though, that’s when it really looks at its best!  People I know who have been, have likened Vegas to Blackpool!  Although I can see  where they’re coming from (the bright lights), I don’t think it can be seriously compared.  Everything is bigger, louder, wider (hehehe and that includes ME now!)  It’s all this ‘Chowing on down’ apparently that does it….. and believe me, there’s a LOT of it going on (half a stone weight gain in a week! and  I am VERY active, and  walk everywhere.  Imagine how much if I didn’t take exercise…
