The walls are stripped, ready for plastering

What a great meeting it was last night at the Star Inn, Back Hope Street, Salford.  A very good turn out indeed: wall to wall people!  There have been many developments since the locals bought the pub.  As you can see from the picture, the black gloss mock Tudor beams have gone.  There are a few that still mourn them, but the majority ruled and down they came.

Before the meeting and before we cleared up

 We have electric, we have heating, applications are underway for a manager and Bazen’s Brewery have come up with a specially brewed ale for us.  It’s called ‘Wandering Star’ and is a bitter.  A  questionnaire went round to see what the locals thought of it (it will be re adjusted if need be), but everyone I talked to thought it was great.  I had a sip or two (was drinking vodka last night, trying to lose weight) and I thought it tasted lovely.  In fact I might drink this instead of lager when we’re up and running.

Great plans are afoot.  The curiously called  BOGAID will kick off with a concert with a local live band, maybe a fire-eater, raffles, and a few celebrities (one from Coronation Street……)  The tickets will be very reasonably priced at around 5.00 each.  Several fund-raising ideas were aired last night (details coming soon when confirmed).  I am beginning to put a lot of information on my Facebook ‘Friends of the Star’ group. which is also showcasing pictures of before and after as well as the locals.

Earlier on

Camera’s were there from BBC 1  last night.  They have been following this interesting story and this documentary should be shown in the New Year in a slot called ‘Inside Out’ usually shown on a Monday 7.30.  I can’t wait to see the finished documentary!  I actually went into the cellar last night….. the stairs are very steep: easier going up than down.  The cellar is bigger than you would think and is stuck in a time warp, want’s clearing and sprucing up a bit.

Well, that’s the gist of what has happened at the last meeting.  If you would like to follow this story from the beginning ;

The Star Inn, a new start

The weather may have been windy, wild and blustering: the rain pelting down, but what an exciting day it was for The Star Inn!  Today another door opened on a new  exciting chapter in the pubs history!  They thought it was all over – but it wasn’t!  In truth, it’s only just starting!   The people entered the forsaken pub and claimed it as their own!  Unbelievably, a few short weeks ago, the Star Inn had a very uncertain future and was up for auction.  The brewery may have  abandoned it, but instead of fuming helplessly and looking for a new local, the people rallied round and saved it by putting their money where their mouths were!

open house

Filming continued today. Despite the rain, and the bar being dry, spirits were high and everyone is so full of hope for the future.  Hard work will ensue as the pub opens its doors at 10 a.m. tomorrow and the practical jobs are distributed and sorted out.  There are exciting plans in store for the peoples pub: including an indoor Ladies lavatory.  Lots of social events and possibly even its own   micro brewery are planned!  What an exciting and heartwarming story this truly is.  People are not only putting their money into their local, they are also putting their hearts, services and their time.  The letters that spell out its name may have been taken back, but nothing can stop the Star from going forward: it’s bright light shining onwards as it has done for the best part of  140 years!  Cheers!

The Star Inn: A Cliff Hanger…

Follow that Star......

Follow that Star......

 What a great meeting it was last night in the Friendship pub, Prestwich Manchester.  The Star committee were well organised.  There were five groups , ranging from Finance to Community.  The builder’s group, which were the largest was very busy: packed with men offering their ideas and services.  One of the proposals, and first on the agenda  is to  build  a Ladies toilet INSIDE!  Yes, unbelievable as it is, the Ladies toilet is, and always has been outside, despite protests throughout the years.  So this is quite a radical move eh!  and I suspect one of many, though they do hope the fabric and history of the place will still shine  through.  There’s no website yet, but if you would like to help, please get in touch with Margaret via

The Star will shine on

The Star will shine on

Last night Nicola from BBC Four came around with her microphone to gather pieces of information regarding the plans for the pub.  She will join the Star people on their journey from beginning to hopefully happy end, and maybe a documentary will emerge!  It’s clear, from last night’s meeting that ideas and enthusiasm abound regarding to the re making of the pub.  A new start awaits ‘The Star’   and people are raring to go: ready to get stuck in, despite the hard work which lies ahead.  One thing is for sure, with all the good will, organisation and belief, this project will not fail for lack of trying!  The reopening is planned for December.  Can’t wait!!!
