Continuing my transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother’  Page 38.  I experimented with script, filling the shapes in with printed defintions of the word ‘stepmother’ and ‘snow’ and ‘white’ etc.  I did  a large board with all the negative spaces filled in, but I havn’t been able to find an image of it.

Rego’s work is subversive and feminist and deals with fears and nightmares.  This is a super article about her.

Continuing with my transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother’.  Page 37 shows  that the image is mostly made from oblongs and triangles.

Page 37 references the t Bathus (b.Paris 1912) ‘Girl and Cat’ painting.  This shows an adolescent girl sitting with her cat, with her feet up, in a gloomy room.  It is a bit of a disturbing image as we are not sure if we are looking at an innocent girl or a sophisticated young woman.  This is the sort of ambiguity that Rego likes to exploit.

In Rego’s picture, the lightest piece of the painting is Snow Whites knickers.  The socks are also white, but they are grubby.  The light source in this painting is also directed at Snow Whites thighs (as in the Bathus image).

I can’t believe it!  These posts certainly add up if you do them every day don’t they?  And I have done one nearly every day (apart from 4)  I started on 30th November 2008 with this post

I now have several catagories, which I keep adding to.  Over the past couple of weeks I have concentrated on Las Vegas and York.  It really is time to get back to some more art stuff, like my transcription and altered book: will maje a concentrated effort to do this this week.

I’m still no wiser why viewing is down more at weekends.  I will just plod on I suppose.  From time to time, I think I shall bring some stuff out of the archives that are relevent to what I am writing about now.  And hopefully, just keep AT IT!

My 130th post:How’s it going so far? Well…….

This is my 130th post!  I’m quite proud of that!  So far, since I started on 29th November 2008, I have only missed 4 days (and one of them was a time difference when I went away).

Although primarily, my blog is about art, there’s also categories, such as holidays, and uncategorised (me, going on with myself about all sorts).   Also art I like and artists that I LOVE.  I may even introduce some new categories, like music (which influences me immensly) and books.  I am an avid reader: I can’t sleep until I’ve read something!

I started off, more or less with my Altered Art book.  It had been tough going, as the words I originally chose (a few years ago…) were chosen for a  vague purpose at the time: and that time had long passed.  But I am pressing on because I am coming to the last pages of this chapter (yes, this is only one chapter!).  The next, will be like a fresh slate.  Here is what I have done so far;-

I have managed to scan quite a few pages from my Transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother.  These are 2 A4 journals stuck together (and many more pages to go).

The holiday section speaks for itself, gradually getting left behind as new outings, new sights and new adventures take place (at least, I hope they do!)

For this page, I attempted a bit of cubism (a  movement invented by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso 1907).  This is where the surface is broken up, put back together, so that different viewpoints emerge.

To be continued tomorrow…..

Spring cleaning this blog (well, thinking about it anyway)

spring-cleaning-on-its-way

A quick one today, as I have to go to work soon (whilst I still have a job to go to!).  I have quite a lot of stuff to be getting on with regarding this blog: it could do with a Spring clean!  I might change the format also because I have been  having trouble with the size of the script, which can be very erratic at times.   Firstly, I must do some more Altered art book pages.  Also more transcription (that is two journals stuck together, so there’s a lot of stuff in there).  I never did get round to writing about The Francis Bacon retrospective we went to before Christmas.  And I have managed to do some new work which needs to go on here.  I started this blog the end of November last year and I havn’t missed many days.  When I went to Las Vegas the other week, I did my blogs just before I went, then scheduled them to come on each day.  But I must have under estimated the time difference because one day is missed out lol!

Using an idea that I used in ‘The Lute Player’, which was inspired by Picasso’s ‘Seated Woman’, I have used a basket weave and various pattern making to translate the shape of the stepmothers body.  I was trying for a hollowed out effect.  It may be interesting to extend this to the whole composition.  It may or may not provide a springboard for further ideas.
