Ghosts of the past walk this way (with orbs)

Ghosts of the past walk this way (with orbs)

Well, I can’t believe that this is my 160th post!  What on earth have I found to write (or ramble on about?)  I now have 11 categories.  Some of these are well left behind – like the London Jaunt and LasVegas.  They’re nice to look back on though.  I am continuing with my Transcription.  That consists of two journals stuck together and  I am nearly coming to the end of the first one.

I have some more surfaces to continue with yet.  The altered art book has 3 pages before the first chapter is finished.  I am then into brand new territory.  Some pages have been prepared, but the words haven’t been chosen (which was  the case when the book disappeared for a few years then popped up.  I then couldn’t remember WHY I’d chosen those particular words, but decided to try to work with them anyway. There are three chapters altogether.

I have introduced a new section called ‘Dear Reader I Read it’ which will critique what I’m reading, or re reading.  Another category is called ‘Bronte Bites’.  This will be about stuff relating to the Brontes.  The Brontes fascinate me, but I do not purport to be an expert on them by any means.  I’m always willing to learn what I can about them from people who are more knowledgable than me.  So any opinion that I give is only my own opinion, and not an expert one.

I will be continuing with ‘Art I LOVE’, because I love SO MUCH art!  I am finding it increasingly difficult to actually do any art (apart from my altered book) as I have so many other things on the go.  That’s my update anyway, and where I am up to at the moment.

Continuing my transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother’  Page 38.  I experimented with script, filling the shapes in with printed defintions of the word ‘stepmother’ and ‘snow’ and ‘white’ etc.  I did  a large board with all the negative spaces filled in, but I havn’t been able to find an image of it.

Rego’s work is subversive and feminist and deals with fears and nightmares.  This is a super article about her.

Continuing with my transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother’.  Page 37 shows  that the image is mostly made from oblongs and triangles.

Page 37 references the t Bathus (b.Paris 1912) ‘Girl and Cat’ painting.  This shows an adolescent girl sitting with her cat, with her feet up, in a gloomy room.  It is a bit of a disturbing image as we are not sure if we are looking at an innocent girl or a sophisticated young woman.  This is the sort of ambiguity that Rego likes to exploit.

In Rego’s picture, the lightest piece of the painting is Snow Whites knickers.  The socks are also white, but they are grubby.  The light source in this painting is also directed at Snow Whites thighs (as in the Bathus image).

I changed the colours around on page 34;  from negative to positive, with the orange dress becoming flesh tone.

The composition is mostly made up of triangular and rectangular shapes!  This relates to the ‘Golden Section’ or the Golden Ratio.  The Golden section formed the basis of  Classical paintings and has it’s roots in Geometry.  It is a sophisticated system for building up a composition.

To visualise the Golden section, draw a diagonal line connecting opposing corners, on a rectangular format.  Then draw a second line from either of the remaining corners so that it intersects the first line by a ninety degree angle.  Now add horizontal and vertical lines which each pass through each point of intersection.  This will look like an off centred Union Jack.  According to Classical theory the resultant divisions will form a basis for building a strong composition.  Each remaining rectangle can also be subdivided to provide further strong points.

Continuing with the transcription of ‘Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother’ –

For this page, I attempted a bit of cubism (a  movement invented by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso 1907).  This is where the surface is broken up, put back together, so that different viewpoints emerge.

Using an idea that I used in ‘The Lute Player’, which was inspired by Picasso’s ‘Seated Woman’, I have used a basket weave and various pattern making to translate the shape of the stepmothers body.  I was trying for a hollowed out effect.  It may be interesting to extend this to the whole composition.  It may or may not provide a springboard for further ideas.

‘Splitting the picture as before, (see page 25 below) and by swapping the pieces around, the Stepmother’s flesh is now textured like her blue dress.  The blue texture has also been applied to Snow White’s skin.  There seems to be some sort of connective structure going on, which may be better expressed as line.”

“This experiment is about trying to get the right tonal values in pastels.  There is a difficulty in trying to recreate the colour of the wall, which is a very unusual shade of grey.  It seems to have a slight purple/pink tone in it which is really hard to capture.” (page 27)

” The image (Page 28 see below) has been to negative and the yellow carpet is now an unusual shade of blue which is yet again proing difficult to get exactly right.”
