Well its my 180th post!  I have only missed 4 days since I started at the end of November last year.  What do I find to write about every day?  Well, not a lot sometimes I admit, but I still manage a paragraph or two.  What do I expect to gain from doing it?  I don’t really know.  Just like doing it.  Sometimes it does seem  that I am wittering  away to myself, but why break the habit of a lifetime eh!

I started my blog with just a few categories, now I have 14!  They are mostly about Art, (which encompasses design too) but there’s other stuff, like places, holidays, books I’ve read and am reading (Christ the Lord, Out of Egypt’ by Anne Rice, which I shall be reviewing when I’ve finished it) and what I’ve watched.  There’s always something to write about, even if it’s only to have a good old moan or rant (I hope that there’s not too many of those…).  My altered art book has not even reached the end of its first chapter yet (I’m just putting the finishing touches to page 24 of the 26 pages in this chapter).

ready for a wedding!

Lots of things have changed since I first started writing my blog (me for a start, I was a lot slimmer lol!) and that’s not because I’m sat here blogging all day…it’s down to me STILL not smoking…which I will be celebrating with a seperate post later!  Our daughter is now married (see ‘What Happened in Vegas Stays here’).  And I’m still probably doing stuff wrong on WordPress…and sometimes the writing STILL goes massive.  You’d have thought that I would have got the hang of it by now wouldn’t you?

p3 and 4.....in the beiginning

p3 and 4.....in the beiginning

The Bank Holiday weekend stretches out before me – and I don’t have to work!  There’s so much to do though on my blog.  I haven’ done an altered art page in my book for quite a while.  I have the next page set out (with a door in) but what to put behind the door….that is the problem.  It’s a shame because when I’ve finished that page, I only have 2 more and I have reached the end of my first chapter.

I may put a slide show to show the complete chapter.  I also need to put some more surfaces on, and I’ve got loads.  There’s some favorite art I need put on, as well as my own.  Yes LOTS to do…just a case of doing it lol!

Altered Art book: Page 23 The muffled voice

Page 23 of my altered art book.  It seems so long since I last did a page, lets hope I’m now on a roll lol!  I am very nearly near the end of the first ‘chapter’ (there are 3 altogether I think) and I am already having a problem closing this book!

The text  I have chosen (long ago)  is;

“Back in his own room he wound the tape back and switched to PLAY.  Nothing for long seconds, then a rustling like leaves, then his voice, wrapped up, as if he was talking through cloth.”

I thought deeply about WHY I had chosen these words and what they said to me.  The idea of recording an event and replaying it: looking back on a moment that has gone.  The need to TELL.  This made me think of some sort of confessional and inevitably, a grill, a barrier beween the teller and the listener.

page-23-detail-

page-23-detail-

Also the idea of talking through cloth, muffled voices: the words indistinct, the voice not being recognised.  Perhaps a yashmak, (a veil worn by Muslim women to cover their faces in public), or a scarf, a gag: voices trying to make themselves distinct through time.  Or when you hear a foreign language and your ears try to pick out words you recognise in your own language (and of course it makes no difference at all, but it doesn’t stop you trying because the urge to communicate is too strong).

Continued tomorrow……

This is my 130th post!  I’m quite proud of that!  So far, since I started on 29th November 2008, I have only missed 4 days (and one of them was a time difference when I went away).

Although primarily, my blog is about art, there’s also categories, such as holidays, and uncategorised (me, going on with myself about all sorts).   Also art I like and artists that I LOVE.  I may even introduce some new categories, like music (which influences me immensly) and books.  I am an avid reader: I can’t sleep until I’ve read something!

I started off, more or less with my Altered Art book.  It had been tough going, as the words I originally chose (a few years ago…) were chosen for a  vague purpose at the time: and that time had long passed.  But I am pressing on because I am coming to the last pages of this chapter (yes, this is only one chapter!).  The next, will be like a fresh slate.  Here is what I have done so far;-

I have managed to scan quite a few pages from my Transcription of Paula Rego’s ‘Snow White and her Stepmother.  These are 2 A4 journals stuck together (and many more pages to go).

The holiday section speaks for itself, gradually getting left behind as new outings, new sights and new adventures take place (at least, I hope they do!)

Altered art book: page 21 continued

Continuing page 21 of my altered art book:

” She’d be laid out in her coffin, pink satin it’d be with blue trimmings to go with her make-up.”

She sounds like the Late Barbera Cartland doesn’t she.  It seems the dead make a great effort to look their best (well, the undertaker does).  But what about the coffin?  They tend to all look the same, wooden.  I myself quite fancy one of those eco friendly Bio degradable ones.  You can actually paint these yourself, or get it done for you.  Look at this one!

Reminds me of the Ancient Egyptians.  Coffins now can be any shape, including space ships, cars, just about everything to reflect the life and loves of the dearly departed.

Like this guitar shaped one from Vic Fearn.  Here are the top ten coffins.

Actually, the more this book goes on, the darker it’s becoming…lets hope the light is at the end of the tunnel or chapter.

Altered art book: page 20 continued

Method used for this page was watercolour, then ink was inscribed (ok, then scribbled…)  I actually used a rubber stamp on this page, a leaf one.  I used some handmade paper, torn at the bottom of the page.  Ribbon was used and some plastic shapes embellished.  I love the colours used on this page.

Altered art book page 16 continued: Cross Shooting

Continuing page 16 the words were:-

“They’d shoot at the wooden crosses”

“The door would shake then

the window

then the door again”

“He became a regular at the Empire of Junk”

“More than a hundred radios”

page-16

page-16

A tall order: an artist who uses crosses.  Well, there’s loads out there isn’t there, especially depicting Christ on the cross.  But that wasn’t quite what I was looking for.  I was concentrating on the Cross as a target. By shooting at this target, there is the possibility of provocation: either an answer from beyond the grave or the living who would be offended at this defacement.

Stanley Spencer(b.1891 – 1959 Cookham Berkshire, UK) depicted Christ in his paintings.  And Christ, to Spencer, always came from Cookham.  Spencer received praise and also heavy criticism for his religious paintings, especially Resurrection’ which takes part in a graveyard.  This picture caused a lot of controversy when it was shown.  Painted between 1924 – 1927, the picture shows Cookham church graveyard with residents rising up from their graves.  The figures of Moses and other prophets sit in stone seats, as the locals rise to the sound of the Last Trumpet.

St Francis Receiving the Stigmata  by Giotto di Bondone (C.1267 – 1337 Florence Italy).  Giotto was also an architect and one of the contributing artists of the Italian Renaissance.  Stigmata of course is the mystical marks that appear on the body of an individual.  These marks correspond with the crucifixion wounds  of Christ.  The reason I have chosen it is because of the bullet like wounds that are being inflicted, raining down  upon the Saint, the follower of the cross.

The Empire of junk needs to be explored, but not here.  The empire stretches for a couple more pages……..
