Happy Christmas and New Year!

In my usual tradition, here is the round up of featured posts for 2011.  It’s been a pretty tubulent year personally for me and I haven’t blogged as much as I usually do – but my New Year resolution is to do so, so get ready for more eclectic mixes of art, design and quirkyness! Continue reading “Happy Christmas and New Year!”

Happy Birthday Richard Dadd!

Today is the birthday of English Victorian artist Richard Dadd (b.1817 – 1886 Chatham Kent)  The supernatural held  a great fascination for Dadd and fairies and other worldly beings abound throughout this artist’s work.  His subject matter is extremely detailed and also included Oriental themes.   At 20 he attended The Royal Academy of Arts with Augustus Egg and WilliamContinue reading “Happy Birthday Richard Dadd!”

Happy Birthday Antoni Gaudi! Reblogged

Today is the birthday of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi.  Antoni Plàcid Guillem Gaudí Cornet (to give him his full title) was born on this day in 1852 and died in 1926.  It is unknown where exactly he was born, but it may have been either Reus or Riudoms (he was baptised the day after his birth in theContinue reading “Happy Birthday Antoni Gaudi! Reblogged”

Happy Birthday Egon Schiele!

Today is the birthday of Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele (b. 1890 – 1918).  Schiele was a protégé of Gustave Klimt and is also associated with the art nouveau movement.  His expressive use of line indicates his substantial  talent.   Shieles’ figures are often twisted and distorted.  They are sinewy, sexually posed and very often disturbing.  Schiele attended the Vienna School ofContinue reading “Happy Birthday Egon Schiele!”

Happy Birthday Salvador Dali – eccentric individualist

Today is the birthday of the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989)  As I have already written a post about the artist (here) I thought it might be fun to take a look at the personality of Dali the man – the fun bits.   This video I think shows the artist’s very individuality.  Dali illustrates thatContinue reading “Happy Birthday Salvador Dali – eccentric individualist”

Happy Birthday Odilon Redon!

Today is the birthday of French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon (b. France 1840 – 1916).  Redon (real name Bertrand-Jean) was also a printmaker, draughtsman and worked in pastels.  Born to an affluent family Redon acquired the nickname Odilon from his mother Odile.  He studied drawing at 15 but changed his path to architecture because his father approved this.  ThisContinue reading “Happy Birthday Odilon Redon!”

Grant Wood – Happy Birthday!

It’s American Regionalist artist Grant Wood’s birthday today.  As I have already celebrated this artist’s birthday (see this post) and wrote about him at some length, I thought it might be interesting to look at more of the artist’s most famous work – American Gothic.  Grant Wood was born on this day in Anamosa IowaContinue reading “Grant Wood – Happy Birthday!”

Tomorrows Party – Dame Barbara Hepworth

Tomorrow is the birthday of British sculptress Dame Barbara Hepworth b.1903 – 1975 –   I shouldn’t really call Hepworth a sculptress – as she believed in equality of the sexes, especially in the arts.  I am putting this post on today because it’s a week since I posted – and I don’t want to get into badContinue reading “Tomorrows Party – Dame Barbara Hepworth”
