Altered Book: Page 24 Pop goes Art

Here are the artists associated with my last altered book page 24.  You can see how I decided to take it to another level by playing on the words I had chosen;

“Pop says “We’re just going to have a little talk”

Therefore, why not let Pop talk?  Pop as a communication – art form or a movement.

Pop art first showed it’s face in mid 1950s Britain and the later part of the 50s in the US.  It goes against the tradition of fine art because it uses mass produced media and is more about techniues and re occuring themes in the mass media.  It was  used as a reaction against  abstract expressionism, using  advertising, comic, commercial and popular images.  It used reproductions and other techniques that take away the elitism about art.  It was a very mix and match, kitschy and eclectic sort of art.

Pop artist Andy Warhol made his advertisement based art  larger than life.  In fact he made everything larger than life, transforming the ordinary into the extra ordinary.   Brillo and Campbells soup cans became up to the minute images.  Peter Blakes, Britains formost Pop artist, drew from many sources: newspapers, advertisements, television, mass culture and  elements of collage.   With Pop art, the  paint  work was gloss, and the lines were clear.   Bits of Dadaism were thrown  into the mix too: the more the merrier it seemed, as long as it was fresh, modern,  commercial and now.

British Pop artist included Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton and David Hockney.  There are so many Pop artists that made a major contribution.  Many can be found HERE and HERE

In Search of the last book (again)

Just a quick post today before work.  Well, I don’t know how I do it, but I have lost my Altered Art book yet AGAIN!  This book is taking me years to do, as I keep mislaying it.  I haven’t done anything in it for quite a while.  I was trying to come up with an artist to match up with the words I had chosen.  I had also put a ‘door’ on the page, but couldn’t decide what to put behind it.  I will have a proper look tomorrow and see what I can do.  Meanwhile, here’s the last page I completed;-

Aw, this has made me really nostalgic for it!  I must find it SOON!

It’s been ages since I put any transcription on.

So –

Page 51 and 52  Continuing  with the sinsister shadow theatre idea from Paula Rego’s’Snow White and her Stepmother’, I played about with the cutouts  so I got this –

These are the last images in the first book (two journals stuck together).

The next artist I researched was Kara Walker.  This is what I wrote;

American artist Kara Walker uses a cut out silhouette technique to explore themes of identity and ethnicity in the USA formed by colonisation and slavery.

She takes her figures from 19th Century stereotypes of ‘Slavery Literature’, presenting the humiliating and violent treatment of the slaves and the sexist attacks on female slaves.”

Well its my 180th post!  I have only missed 4 days since I started at the end of November last year.  What do I find to write about every day?  Well, not a lot sometimes I admit, but I still manage a paragraph or two.  What do I expect to gain from doing it?  I don’t really know.  Just like doing it.  Sometimes it does seem  that I am wittering  away to myself, but why break the habit of a lifetime eh!

I started my blog with just a few categories, now I have 14!  They are mostly about Art, (which encompasses design too) but there’s other stuff, like places, holidays, books I’ve read and am reading (Christ the Lord, Out of Egypt’ by Anne Rice, which I shall be reviewing when I’ve finished it) and what I’ve watched.  There’s always something to write about, even if it’s only to have a good old moan or rant (I hope that there’s not too many of those…).  My altered art book has not even reached the end of its first chapter yet (I’m just putting the finishing touches to page 24 of the 26 pages in this chapter).

ready for a wedding!

Lots of things have changed since I first started writing my blog (me for a start, I was a lot slimmer lol!) and that’s not because I’m sat here blogging all day…it’s down to me STILL not smoking…which I will be celebrating with a seperate post later!  Our daughter is now married (see ‘What Happened in Vegas Stays here’).  And I’m still probably doing stuff wrong on WordPress…and sometimes the writing STILL goes massive.  You’d have thought that I would have got the hang of it by now wouldn’t you?

p3 and 4.....in the beiginning

The Bank Holiday weekend stretches out before me – and I don’t have to work!  There’s so much to do though on my blog.  I haven’ done an altered art page in my book for quite a while.  I have the next page set out (with a door in) but what to put behind the door….that is the problem.  It’s a shame because when I’ve finished that page, I only have 2 more and I have reached the end of my first chapter.

I may put a slide show to show the complete chapter.  I also need to put some more surfaces on, and I’ve got loads.  There’s some favorite art I need put on, as well as my own.  Yes LOTS to do…just a case of doing it lol!

Continuing my Altered art book with page 18, I am continuing with the ‘junk’ theme.  On page 17 I looked at the connoctations of the word ‘junk’, exploring drugs and  assemblage (disgarded stuff used to evoke memories).  On this page is an image of a hand made machine.  I don’t know what it is, I just picked it because it looked like it would revolve (which fitted in with the text).  Don’t forget, a lot of these images and words were chosen a long time ago, and the original reason has been forgotten.  The text on this page reads as follows: –

He stared down at the machine

The machine began to revolve

a gritty roaring sound like the ocean dragging pebbles

soaked up by a piece of blotting paper

It made me think about other pieces of junk.  Junk that we carry around with us: unwanted thoughts, blind beliefs, superstitions, paraphanalia which we don’t really need but which we are frightened of letting go of because ‘something bad’ may happen.

The machinery part of the text put me in mind of this place ‘Forevertron’ Wisconsin USA, the biggest scrap metal sculpture in the world.  Its inventor Dr Evermore sounds quite a character…….

From construction to destruction.  In 2001 London artist Michael Landy destroyed all his possessions in the name of art.  He shredded and granulated everything, and I mean everything, including his credit cards: everything.  This took place in an Old C & A store in London and lasted 2 weeks.  The exhibition was called ‘Break Down’ and by the time the exhibtion ended Landy was left with his cat and girlfriend.  Why did he do it?  Apparently it was a statement about Consumerism and more…This is what he said at the time:-

“I see this as the ultimate consumer choice. Once Break Down has finished, a more personal break down, will commence – life without my self-defining belongings.”

Just done  a foolish thing here.  Apparently I published Page 9 Altered art book a lot earlier than I thought.  I thought I had saved it to a draft but I must have pressed publish!  Now I’ve got 2 posts for yesterday.  I WILL get the hang of this (eventually)….
