Beautiful Midsummer Light by Boontje

Beautiful Midsummer Light by Boontje

These unusual designs are from Dutch born, London based product designer Tord Boontje.  His influences are nature itself.  In his earlier work ‘Rough and Ready Furniture he recycled from old wood giving the furniture a very organic feel.   Amidst the playfulness, there is a huge amount of craftsmanship. He uses a variety of materials including steel……  I love the way some of the cut outs cast their shadow!

His designs are unusual and pay a lot of attention to surface.  He has designed glassware, lighting, furniture textiles and even greetings cards!  I LOVE these Witches utensils!!!

Happy Birthdays Dear Artists!

My section about celebrating artists birthdays is growing quite nicely.  There are lots of artists I want to write about but I don’t seem to have the time.  Those I do write about, I tend to make it brief.  I hate it when it’s an artist I really like and I’ve missed the birthday grrr!  You may  see ‘Happy Belated Birthday’ occasionally: I try to keep those to the next day.  Here are the one’s I have done so far;-

Aubrey Beardsley, the man himself

Aubrey Beardsley, the man himself

It’s artist and illustrator  Aubrey Beardsley’s birthday today!  He was born  in Brighton England in 1872 and died    young  of TB in France in 1898.  Although his main body of work only spans 6 years, the work is unmistakable and it is clear that Beardsley had his own highly individualistic style.

He was an art editor for the Yellow Book , an art periodical.  His style is Art Nouveau and is mostly in black ink format, though did illustrate in colour sometimes.  A lot of his drawings have erotic elements, especially his mythology and history themes.

His drawings are exquisite though.  He illustrated Oscar Wilde’s Salome amongst other historical themes,  He also turned his hand to political satire with his caricatures.  He  was also a writer:as well as his editorial work he also began writing an erotic novel which he wasn’t to finish.

He was an eccentric person and liked to reflect the decadence of the period in his work.  He influenced many artists, including the French Symbolists.  For a more detailed look at his life see HERE, and for more of his exquisite drawings………….look HERE

And what about this for the child who has everything?  This pacifier is 14k white gold, the most expensive in the world.  It’s very sad when you think of the babies who could be helped with all the money spent on this………..

Perhaps it’s just me, but I would be terrified if this Ducky Buddy was hanging from my cot.  It makes me wonder if any of these designers were children once themselves lol!

Once again we went for a drink in the tiny Circus Tavern Manchester.  What a great little pub this is, so full of personality and personalities.   This time we sat in the backroom.  This is full of football memorabilia.

As soon as you go into this pub, people start talking to you!  Complete strangers start up conversations!  Singing is positively encouraged!  I couldn’t believe it!  We got talking to a lovely couple and joined in the singing.  Also we met these great lads from Longsight Manchester.  This pub is highly recommended on a night on the town.  The bar is tiny so it’s waitress service, and it’s always service with a smile!

Weird and Whacky Designs: Walk a Mile in my Shoes (if you dare)

More strange and unexepected  shoes!  How do they keep on coming up with them?

They get weirder and whackier….

the question must surely be WHY: but what is the answer?

the question must surely be WHY: but what is the answer?

What’s puzzling me about the above shoes is do your toes fit into the shoe toes or do they stop short?  So, do you have to get a size bigger than your actual feet?

These shoes are TOO cute for words!  I would have screamed for these as a child….and I still wouldn’t mind a pair!
