 Continuing with my Newcastle visit;

Bessie Surtees House Quayside Newcastle

Bessie Surtees House Quayside Newcastle

Bessie Surtees House Jacobean architecture provides the backdrop to the romantic tale of young Bessie Surtees, daughter of Aubone Surtees, a wealthy Banker, who escaped through a window of this house to elope with John Scott, son of a coal fitter, whom her father didn’t approve of.  Scott later became the Lord Chancellor of England, and all was forgiven!  The house consists of two merchant’s houses, built in the 16th and 17thcentury.  It is well worth a visit and it’s free admission too!

Jacobean paneling and a beautiful plaster ceiling (a copy of the original)  are the main features in the banqueting room.

 Merchants would gather to watch their ships come in from the window.  The blue panel in the window indicates the route which Bessie Surtees used to elope with her lover.

When we went, only three rooms were open to the public.  That didn’t stop us having a good old nosey though..look what’s behind the panelling!
