Mysterious Places: Roche Rock

The mysterious rock

When I came across my Cornish pictures yesterday (Barbara Hepworth museum), I uncovered a cache of interesting places we went on our Cornish holiday 3 years ago.  One of them was Roche rock.  We had recently read about it in our favorite magazine Fortean Times. and desperately wanted to see it!

This rock is surreal!  Where did it come from?  It stands there almost accusingly.  It has a life or a presence all of its own.  Even on a summer’s day, it has a dark broodiness.  Apparently the chapel at the top (now in ruin) was dedicated to St Michael in 1409.

The rock is a natural phenomena and is millions of years old.  It has a lava like substance that seems to have been arrested in mid bubbling lol!

There was once a hermitage below the chapel and legends abound about Roche rock, which has been featured in the film ‘The Omen  The Final Conflict.  Read some more about it here.
