Here there is a reversal , by squeezing and compressing the format, both figures appear squat and the composition takes on a more active and aggressive stance.  The stepmother almost looks like she is attacking Snow White.

Even in this rough outline, without any clues to what is going on within the positive shapes of the figures, the ‘jutting’ out of the stepmother’s head and the end of her scarf suggest confrontation.

The tonal values of the composition are mostly mid to dark.  The lighter elements seem to be the sleeves, socks, dress and knickers of Snow White, perhaps to denote the ‘purity’ of her in contrast to her more worldly made up Stepmother, who has slightly darker skin, and dress.
