Happy Birthday Dear Modigliani!

It’s Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani today.  He was born in Italy in 1884 and died  in 1920.  Modigliani led a typical bohemian lifestyle, but with more excesses than most.  He was marked for an early death by contracting TB whilst young.

Modigliani’s style is his own though.  He is not easily classified, though he is often called an Expressionist.  He was influenced by Toulouse Lautrec, Cezanne:  his sculpture owes much to the influence of  Brancusi.  Although he did paint a few landscapes, he became famous for his portraits and nudes.

  1. I have been moved by Modigliani’s paintings. Although simplistic in nature, by looking at them one can tell the story behind the painting and one can see how Amedeo Modigliani lived, his sorros, his happiness and his pain. I myself am a painter and have studied deeply the impresionist period of art. I have always wonderer what makes me the way that I am, and by looking deep into Modigliani’s paintings I have come to the conclusion that I am who I am and have accepted it. Viva Amedeo Modigliani!!!

  2. Hi Barbara , Glad you like Modigliani, his work does indeed have a pathos. I think every artist has a hero, who they admire and identify with. I can identify with the immediacy of ‘understanding’ an artists work too. I had this feeling when looking at a painting by Frank Auerbach (Head of Gerda Boehm). Thanks for visiting – appreciated!

  3. hi,i like modigliani paintings to.
